Professional Cosmetology Curriculum Objectives, Skills, and Content
The curriculum for students enrolled in a cosmetologist course will consist of 1,600 clock hours of technical instruction and practical operations as mandated by the State of Washington Department of Licensing. Technical instruction means instruction given by demonstration, lecture, classroom participation, or examination. Practical operation means actual performance by the student of a complete service on another person and using mannequins.
Performance Objective
Acquire knowledge of laws and rules regulating the established Washington State cosmetology practices.
Acquire the knowledge of sanitation and sterilization as related to all phases of hair, skin and nails.
Acquire knowledge of general theory relative to cosmetology including anatomy, physiology, chemistry and theory.
Acquire basic business management techniques common to cosmetology.
Skills to Be Developed
Learn the proper use of implements relative to all cosmetology services.
Acquire the knowledge of analyzing the scalp, face and hands before all services begin to determine any disorders.
Learn the procedures and terminology used in performing all cosmetology services.
Learn the proper procedure of manicuring to include water & oil manicure and pedicure.
Learn the application of brush-on nails, nail wraps and nail tips.
Attitudes and Appreciations to be developed
Appreciate good workmanship common to cosmetology.
Possess a positive attitude towards the public and fellow workers.
Exhibit and appreciate honesty and integrity.
Have improved personal skills in dealing with patrons and colleagues.
Course Contents: The curriculum for cosmetology course will consist of 1,600 clock hours of technical instruction including theory and practical operations covering all practices constituting the art of cosmetology. Instruction will include:
200 hours of theory
1200 hours of practical skills training
100 hours of skills of applications of manicuring and pedicuring
100 hours of skills in application of esthetic services
Timeframe and Hours: Students are expected to complete their course of study in 9-10 months. Attendance at the Academy is from 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday-Friday.
